Hands-On Labs

 

Soil Science

Our soil science room is ideal for students in 2nd -5th grades to learn about the components of soil structure. Activities range from studying the composition of soil to testing rates of water flow through various types of soil. This classroom also features information on rocks, minerals, recyclying and composting.








Animal Science

Our Animal Science room offers facts and activities related to barnyard animals. Our baby chicks and ducks are the highlight of this classroom. Depending on the time of year, we have various breeds of baby chickens, ducks and eggs ready to hatch. This classroom offers insight and interesting facts about animal products, behaviors, care and growth.







Plants and Horticulture

Our plant classroom introduces students to seeds and plants. Our lessons teach students about germination, growing conditions, environmental effects on plant growth and parts of plants. Fun and interesting facts about plant life cycles, production, and growing trends in North Carolina are discussed in this lab. Come plant a seed to start your own garden or dissect a seed in search of an embryo regardless of your age you’ll learn a lot about North Carolina’s agriculture.

This room also can be used to teach children nutrition and making healthy food choices.




Insects

The seasonal insect room is featured in the Spring and Summer. Our learning lab offers live specimens ranging from butterflies to a Madagascar Hissing Roach. Learn about the parts of insects and how they are beneficial to agriculture. Take home an insect designed of recycled materials to teach others about the structures of insects.
